Service Positions

Practice Committee Member 

Requirements:

  • At least 6 months of continuous abstinence from recreational drugs, alcohol, & actively working on identified process addictions
  • Working Recovery Dharma program & continual dedication to practice and ethical conduct
  • Regular attendance at meetings
  • Member voted in by Practice Committee

Responsibilities:

  • Attend monthly practice committee meetings
  • Consistent communication and involvement with other PC members
  • Participate in Democratic decision making process and feedback
  • Maintain assigned service position, as required

The Practice Committee is made up of volunteers from the community who assist behind the scenes and manage the business aspects of the group. Here is a list of what we are and what we are not:

We are:

  • Volunteers
  • In Recovery with a minimum of 6 months continuous abstinence
  • Committed to the precepts
  • Here for peer support and share our own practice experiences
  • Here to look out for the health and safety of the Sangha
  • Here to handle the financial and business aspects of the group
  • Responsible for the RD YYC e-mail and social media
  • Here to ensure things get done behind the scenes
  • Here to ensure we continue a healthy relationship with CommunityWise and it’s other members

We are not:

  • Paid employees
  • Therapists, councillors or health care professionals
  • Here to mediate personal differences unless they affect the health and safety of the group as a whole
  • Responsible for the actions of individuals in the community, other than ourselves

 

Meeting Facilitator

Requirements:

  • Attend facilitator training
  • At least 3 months of continuous abstinence from recreational drugs, alcohol, & process addictions
  • 3 months trial period
  • Working Recovery Dharma program & continual dedication to practice and ethical conduct
  • Regular attendance at meetings

Responsibilities:

  • Come in early to prepare, ensure all meeting materials are in place, welcome members
  • Be attentive to the group, especially newcomers & newer members
  • Follow the meeting script to facilitate the meeting and lead the discussion
  • Count the number of attendees, and fill out the meeting log during the meeting
  • Provide books and collect payment
  • Answer any meeting-related questions
  • Count Dana & put away meeting supplies – put key in the lockbox
  • Count and record the dana on the envelope and the meeting log – give to Treasurer or put in lock box
  • Ensure all scripts, meditations and other paperwork/literature is put away in the appropriate binders, etc.
  • Maintain contact with practice committee about any meeting-related issues that can be brought to business meetings

 

Sangha Manager 

Number of Positions: 1 | Rotation: Yearly

Requirements:

  • At least one year of continuous abstinence from all recreational drugs, alcohol & actively working on identified process addictions
  • At least one year of regular attendance at meetings
  • Working Recovery Dharma Program & continued dedication to practice & ethical conduct
  • Regular involvement in business meetings

Responsibilities:

  • Communicate with Philip & other CommunityWise staff when necessary (i.e.meeting space, mailbox, rent, etc.)
  • Act as liaison between CommunityWise and facilitators/sangha
  • Coordinate Sangha Business Meetings
  • Communicate with facilitators and group members about any issues that should be brought to business meetings (i.e.: meeting space/format/script, inventory/dharma, talk nights, retreats, service opportunities, social events)
  • Create business meeting agendas & send out for group review
  • Facilitate business meetings – alone or collaborate with other member(s)
  • Create/print out any necessary handouts etc. for business meetings, post online
  • Assign a minute-taker for business meetings and ensure minutes are saved and available upon request
  • Monitor mailbox
  • Provide support for Sangha volunteers & facilitators
  • Point person to Recovery Dharma Non-Profit and other Regional meetings
  • Point person for workshops and events
  • Communicate with group volunteers – provide support/information/guidance wherever needed – coordinate back-up volunteers when needed
  • Organize facilitator training
  • Coordinate with Treasurer to order new books, purchase supplies when necessary Print out pamphlets if needed
  • Submit receipts to Treasurer

 

Treasurer 

Number of Positions: 1 | Rotation: Yearly

Requirements:

  • At least two years of continuous abstinence from all recreational drugs, alcohol & process addictions
  • Working Recovery Dharma program & continual dedication to practice & ethical conduct
  • Regular attendance at meetings
  • Regular involvement in business meetings

Responsibilities:

  • Collect money & store Dana from meetings – safely store it prior to depositing at the bank
  • Make regular deposits to bank account (dana is deposited regularly so as to not hold excess cash on hand
  • Maintain records of dana collected
  • File deposit slips for records
  • Banking: act as signing authority for bank account – keep debit card & hold access to online
  • Roll coin
  • Pay rent monthly to CommunityWise
  • Review monthly statements to ensure they are correct
  • Manage funding for meeting supplies & literature, social events, recovery events, etc.
  • Track all purchases and file all receipts
  • Coordinate with other sangha members (i.e.: Resource Coordinator, Group Secretary) to manage group-related purchases o Provide reimbursement wherever necessary
  • Create Treasurer’s reports for business meetings

 

Communications Manager 

Number of Positions: 1 | Rotation: Yearly

Requirements:

  • At least 1 year of continuous abstinence from all recreational drugs, alcohol & process addictions
  • Working Recovery Dharma program & continual dedication to practice & ethical conduct
  • Regular attendance at meetings
  • Regular involvement in business meetings

Responsibilities:

  • Manage Email Account and Social Media (Instagram, Facebook, Google Groups)
  • Monitor email and social media accounts daily and respond to email inquiries. Communicate appropriate information to other Practice Committee members
  • Manage email contacts, add/delete when necessary
  • Send out group email correspondence
  • Act as main contact person for other recovery groups, Recovery Day, treatment facilities, etc.
  • Add members to the Google Group when requested
  • Post weekly to social media outlets to engage community
  • change lock codes every 6 months

 

Social Committee Coordinator 

Number of Positions: 1 | Rotation: Yearly

Requirements:

  • At least 6 months of continuous abstinence from all recreational drugs, alcohol & process addictions
  • Working Recovery Dharma program & continual dedication to practice & ethical conduct
  • Regular attendance at meetings
  • Regular involvement in business meetings

Responsibilities:

  • Work with Communication Manager to host Social events and post information online
  • Brainstorm social events to engage sangha
  • Organize and schedule events
  • Communicate with sangha

 

Facilitator Trainer 

Number of Positions: 1 | Rotation: Yearly

Requirements:

  • At least 1 year of continuous abstinence from all recreational drugs, alcohol & process addictions
  • Working Recovery Dharma program & continual dedication to practice & ethical conduct
  • Regular attendance at meetings
  • Regular involvement in business meetings

Responsibilities:

  • Appoint a backup person

 

Door Greeter 

Can be appointed at the start of each meeting by the Meeting Facilitator

Requirements:

  • Regular attendance at meetings
  • Working the Recovery Dharma Program

Responsibilities:

  • In charge of lighting and doors (i.e. adjust lighting for reading vs. sharing. Ensure door stays open until the meeting starts)
  • Greet sangha members as they arrive, offer tea
  • Help newcomers find the meeting if asked
  • Help with seating and set-up
  • Retrieve more chairs if needed
  • Rearrange for wheelchair space if necessary
  • Direct people to cushions or more seating if necessary
